A handsaw should suffice for trees that are smaller but a larger tree will probably require a more powerful cutting tool such as a chainsaw.
When cutting down a tree it is important to start cutting with a smaller incision on the direction of which you want the tree to fall. This is called an undercut. It should be at about a 90 degree angle that goes about 1/4 of the way though the stump. After the undercut is made, a second cut called a back cut should be used to cut down the tree. It is very important that the back cut should be made above the undercut or else the tree could end up falling in the wrong direction. Always try to get out of the way as soon as the tree is cut down. There is a chance that the tree could end up snapping back and falling in an unexpected direction when it is cut down.
